Chorus:

There will be 9 regular choral rehearsals (including two with orchestra), plus one dress rehearsal, and three performances.

Orchestra: There will be only one orchestral rehearsal without the chorus (March 2nd), two rehearsals with chorus, one dress rehearsal, one rehearsal with soloists, and the three performances.

NOTE 1: With the nucleus of excellent musicians we have who have sung or played with us in the past and the highly talented musicians that are joining us this year we will have no sectionals. This means we expect you to know the music when you come to rehearsals so we can spend our time interpreting and refining.

NOTE 2: Please check all these dates against your personal calendar to avoid last minute conflicts.

Choral Scores:

  1. Although we have a limited number of scores, you will not be able to check them out. You are more than welcome to use them during rehearsals and for performances, or you may purchase your own personal copy. I suggest you do the latter, particularly if you plan on singing Messiah more than once. You can obtain copies online (Schirmer Edition) from sheetmusicplus.com.
  2. All choral scores will need a black cover. We have several that may be borrowed for the dress rehearsal and the performances. Hopefully this year we will be able to buy covers for all choral scores.
  3. Chorus # 17 "Glory to God" will be sung in Spanish. Scores with the words in Spanish will be available for rehearsals and performances.

Orchestra scores:

  1. Scores may be checked out; make sure to sign the check-out form. As you can see these scores are in good condition. Please treat them with care.
  2. Only use pencils to mark parts.
  3. Please turn in your score after the last performance.

Suggestions for successful rehearsals:

Everyone

  1. Be on time (this means in your place ready to rehearse at least 5 minutes before rehearsal is scheduled to begin)
  2. Help with set up/clean up. The more we do when we are at the Eccles Theater (dress rehearsal and performances), the less it costs us.
  3. Listen to recordings of Messiah as often as possible between now and the performances
  4. Practice during the week
  5. Bring your own pencil to mark your score, otherwise a pencil will be provided
  6. Number your measures (every 10)
  7. Turn off pagers/beepers/cell phones or use vibration mode
  8. Review your part while waiting during the rehearsal
  9. If you are going to be absent for a rehearsal please notify the concertmistress (Claire Cardon) if you are in the orchestra or the conductor (John Ribera) if you are in the chorus
  10. Have fun!

Chorus

  1. Warm up your voice before coming to rehearsal
  2. Do not eat chocolate, drink milk or eat sugar-based foods before rehearsal and performances
  3. Bring water; drink plenty during breaks
  4. Do not talk any more than absolutely necessary during rehearsal--if you must talk, please whisper
  5. Sing with heart and voice
  6. If you are not familiar with your part we can provide rehearsal CDs for most of the choruses at a nominal cost Music director: John Ribera Phone: 797-7190 (office) or 754-7184 (home) 512-0898 (cell) Email: jribera@.usu.edu or drravioli@digis.net

Concert attire:
Orchestra - concert black
Chorus - Women - conservative dresses (dark, solid)
Men - white shirt, dark conservative suit or tux, black or dark blue bow tie (we have several ties that may be borrowed).

* Harry Heap (HH) will handle the choral rehearsal on March 2nd until I arrive.

**Dress rehearsal: Wear concert attire for the first part of the rehearsal as we will have group photos taken then. You may wish to bring a change of clothes so you can change into something more comfortable for the remainder of the rehearsal.

This schedule is subject to change; we do our best to make as few changes as possible.

Thank you in advnace for participating in this year's concert season.
